PLOT: A determined woman (Hilary Swank) works with a hardened boxing trainer (Clint Eastwood) to become a professional.
WHY IT’S HERE:
Because it’s one of the greatest pump fakes in Hollywood history, like “Psycho.” It leads you down the garden path, like it’s gonna be a more “mature” (if that’s the right word) version of “The Karate Kid”, yet another “Rocky” retread. And then the movie takes an abrupt left turn into darker territory. This is the third time I’ve watched this movie, and even though I know intellectually where it’s headed, I still get apprehensive, edgy, ’cause I know what’s about to happen, and I’m still not prepared for it. STILL. (In the words of the social media generation, I am still shook.) Give Eastwood grief about his politics all you want…the man has directed some amazing, culturally significant films, and this is no exception.
(You may notice I haven’t said much about the actual PLOT of the film…that’s on purpose. If you haven’t seen this movie, you deserve to watch it unfold “in real time”, as it were, unsullied by spoilers from yours truly, or anyone else. It’s worth your time.)
